SFMTA Releases Final Proposal For Upper Market Street Safety Project

On Thursday, the SFMTA released its final project proposal for the Upper Market Street Safety Project, which aims to increase safety and comfort for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike on Upper Market Street between Octavia Boulevard and Castro Street. The project has been a long time coming, after months of meetings, presentations and most recently, an open house in May(more)

Traffic moved for decades without much trouble. Why is it such a dilemma now? Could it be the wrong people are in charge of it as has been suggested by a lot of people? Time for a change in personnel.

The fastest way to make the streets safer is to hire a new traffic light manager who knows how to move traffic. Left turn signals are a good start. Longer yellow lights would also help. In November the voters will get to voice their opinion on the red street carpets.

If the reaction to the Mission Street mess is any indication, they will vote the red carpet masters down.

  1. You think mission was bad this will be worse. Way less cars on market street long blocks of yellow zones and no left turns etc. vision zero is not even policy nor is it some ballot measure that was voted on. It’s just an idea by some group of folks at the Sfmta. It’s amazing how citizens have allowed money to be spent on this crap for so long. The Sfmta definition of “high injury corridor” is what streets have the most vehicle travel. None of their vision zero shananagins have reduced anything. So they spend money on a bulb out corner. Did that speed up muni? No. Did it stop people from jay walking? No. Are they any safer? No. There’s still a crosswalk still a stop light no difference except for one. On a regular corner that doesn’t stick out much you were actually protected by the park cars. Bulb outs pretty much stuck out further into the streets past the parked cars.

They can’t force a way of travel apon anybody. When I take muni or walk it’s a choice. When you begin to force ot specific ways of travel apon people your really just infringing on ones civil liberties. If I choose to that’s because it’s my right. This city is going down the tubes and once things tank at the end of the year it will be an abandoned city with colorful painted streets.
