Muni changes course on millions in bond funds

Delays in spending a voter-approved 2014 bond measure on transportation infrastructure in San Francisco has prompted transit officials to reprogram some of the bond money into other projects that are ready to go and in need of funds.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Board of Directors approved redirecting $26.2 million from the first bond issuance of the 2014 Transportation and Road Improvement General Obligation Bond from Muni transit improvements to Muni facility upgrades.

Along with the reprogramming of the bond money, directors also are requesting to a second issuance of $92.8 million from the Board of Supervisors…

The SFMTA will spend $21.1 million in upgrading its Burke Warehouse facility that will eventually house overhead wires and provide extra capacity storage for the transit agency.

Another $11 million will go towards the second phase of Islais Creek project. The project includes the construction of a 65,000 square foot motor coach maintenance and operations facility, according to the SFMTA.

Other projects the second bond issuance will fund toward the electrification of Caltrain ($20 million), the BART canopy project ($3 million), and a number of bike and pedestrian safety projects…(more)

Muni riders to see reroutes, longer trips amid reconstruction of 100-year-old Twin Peaks Tunnel

Long-delayed Twin Peaks Tunnel repair work is finally on track again, and that means reroutes affecting some 81,000 daily transit riders.

For the thousands who rely on Muni’s K-Ingleside, L-Taraval and M-Oceanview light-rail lines, shuttles will replace normal service during the planned Twin Peaks Tunnel construction, with transfers to other buses needed to arrive at some regular destinations.

The work was originally slated to start last fall, then again in January, and now finally the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency quietly announced last week that track-work on the 100-year-old tunnel will begin in April…

The Twin Peaks Tunnel is a vital connector between the west side of The City and downtown, serving some 81,000 daily riders on the K, L and M lines each day, all of whom will need to adjust to a new, temporarily altered commute.

Chain Reaction Of Injures After Muni Bus Falls Apart

An accident involving the overhead equipment above a San Francisco Municipal Railway bus injured four people downtown this morning, fire and Muni officials said.
The 31-Balboa bus was near Market and Main streets around 10:30 a.m. when the accident occurred, authorities said.
A rope connecting to the overhead poles on the bus came loose and struck a nearby bus stop sign, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.
The sign hit an adult leading a group of schoolchildren on a field trip and also hit one of the children, fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said.
Those two both fell onto another adult and child. All four suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital as a precaution, Talmadge said… (more)

The sad state of Muni vehicles and equipment is well documented. Most of the city’s lawsuits involve the SFMTA. When will the city officials quite approving transfer of Muni funds from Muni operations to non-Muni projects?
