Since the churches and their followers are doing a huge job of helping the homeless and the less fortunate among us, helping them by allowing parking seems a small gesture. This does impact neighbors, but they would be impacted by removing parking, so this keeps the status quo. In order to help the neighbors, SFMTA should leave their street parking alone. No more private entities taking their parking.

 

Citizen group votes to abolish illegal church parking near Dolores Park

Illegal parking for churchgoers on the streets near Dolores Park must go.

So says a citizen advisory group convened by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to address parking concerns created by churchgoers on Dolores and Guerrero streets in the Mission district.

For decades, weekend churchgoers illegally parked their vehicles along medians on Dolores and Guerrero streets, blocking the middle of the street. But the vehicles were not regularly ticketed, which neighbors have complained amounts to a de-facto “turn the other cheek” from city officials.

In response to neighbors’ concerns, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency convened a group of citizens, from church representatives to secular neighbors, to settle the issue.

Now the Dolores/Guerrero Median Parking Advisory Committee has spoken: a vote by the Dolores/Guerrero Median Parking Advisory Committee on Thursday morning recommended parking along road medians on Guerrero and Dolores be abolished.

The decision is not final, but is instead a proposal SFMTA staff will present to its Board of Directors in about three months, said John Knox White of the SFMTA.

SFMTA staff may also submit a proposal separate from that of the citizen group, Knox White said.

Still, the citizen group’s proposal to abolish median parking could impact that final vote… (more)

As the SFMTA city authorities squeeze the parking out of San Francisco more people will feel the pinch and stay away. Getting rid of the churches, and other charitable organizations who serve the less advantaged citizens will put more disadvantaged people at risk. This is part of the plan to rid the city of undesirables. A church is not required to serve the gods of greed.

 

 

Chronicle Watch: Some S.F. drivers still feed meters on Sundays

Street parking in San Francisco is now free on Sundays, but you wouldn’t know it from the 6,500 or so meters that still warn of enforcement — and ably take your cash.

Signs that demand payment from noon to 6 p.m. Sundays have not been removed from about a quarter of the city’s meters since San Francisco stopped charging for Sunday parking in July, according to records from the Municipal Transportation Agency.

While the digital displays on meters have been changed to say there’s no parking charge, the conflicting claims are creating confusion for drivers already prone to anxiety over the city’s patchwork of colored curbs, permit zones and street-cleaning signs…

“As they upgrade the meters, they’re updating the signs on the sides,” said Paul Rose, a spokesman for the Municipal Transportation Agency.

Rose said it would be too laborious to change the listed hours at every meter, only to return in coming months to replace the entire device… (more)

That sounds about right. It is too much trouble for the SFMTA to let you know when parking is free. It is too much trouble for them to put up signs that you can read before you park letting you know what the parking rules are. It is too much trouble for SFMTA to set up an easy method to appeal illegal tickets. It is too much trouble for SFMTA to serve the public that supports their exorbitant salaries, but, it is not too much trouble for SFMTA officials to dream up new ways to drive us mad.

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — San Francisco may be raking in profits from parking meters when parking is supposed to be free.

Signage on many San Francisco parking meters still indicates Sunday enforcement, even though the city recently stopped charging for Sunday parking.

“I don’t know why they’re not saying free parking, because that’s what it is now,” one man told KPIX 5… (more)

We have been hearing about this since the Mayor and press first mentioned that parking will be free on Sundays again.

Not only did the SFMTA not change the signs, they also did not change the much touted smart meters. Many meters still flash the expired message on Sundays.

You may want to treat this like a crime and report any confusing signs and meters you see to the SFMTA so they will have a record of the complaints. There is a at least one class action lawsuit regarding confusing signs pending so the department is well aware of the signage problem.

As always, let the Supervisors know about the problem.

Scrutinizing SFMTA leader Last-ditch effort to save Sunday parking meters opposed by supervisors

In what may have been the final opportunity to overturn a decision to revert to free Sunday parking in San Francisco, an appeal by transit advocates to require a full program environmental review was rejected by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

While the abolishment of Sunday parking meter enforcement is set to take effect, the vote exhibited the ongoing conflicts between drivers and transit riders as well as the ongoing political tensions over Muni funding decisions…

Earlier this year, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency bowed to Mayor Ed Lee’s call to stop Sunday metering, which generates approximately $11 million annually. Enforcement had been in place since January 2013. The supervisors also voted to postpone for at least two years a vehicle license fee increase, which would have generated $1 billion over 15 years.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, who rejected the appeal, said he finds fault with the transit funding decisions.

Some have been more than happy to see the end of Sunday metering. Christopher Bowman, who is leading an effort to place a November ballot measure to create an official anti-Sunday parking meter policy, said that greenhouse gases are being emitted because drivers are leaving San Francisco to do their shopping where parking is free. Supervisor David Campos said even if the appeal were granted it wouldn’t address the fundamental problem of the mayor effectuating transit policy changes. “I think the solution is to actually reform the way that this agency is governed.”

Currently the transit agency’s board of directors are appointed by the mayor. It would take voter approval to change the governance… (more)

Sunday Meter Repeal Needs No CEQA Review, Say SFMTA and Planning Dept.

An appeal claiming that the repeal of Sunday parking meters is an action that requires environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act is baseless, according to responses issued by the SFMTA and Planning Department this week.

The appeal, filed by Livable City and the SF Transit Riders Union, is set for a hearing and vote at the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The board will not vote not on the merits of running parking meters on Sundays. Instead, the board will vote on whether CEQA would require an environmental impact report for the SFMTA’s new budget, which directs the agency to stop charging for meters on Sundays. The supervisors’ decision is expected to be largely informed by the recommendations of the SFMTA and the Planning Department… (more)

 

Greed knows no bounds. Non-profits suing hand that feeds them.

Let’s see if we have this right, Mario and his non-profit friends who are funded by the government (our tax dollars) are suing said government over a CEQA review requirement. Was a CEQA review performed prior to instating Sunday meter enforcement? If not, how can there be a requirement to eliminate enforcement now?

Muni doesn’t have a money problem. SFMTA has a spending problem. They also live in a time warp. They are planning for 2030 and we are living in 2014. When things are mess now, why should we trust them to fix the future?

S.F. Sunday parking meter charge voted down

After being bombarded for hours from all sides, the city’s Municipal Transportation Agency board voted to give up $11 million in annual revenue and go along with Mayor Ed Lee‘s plan to stop charging for parking in metered spaces on Sundays.

The panel voted unanimously to scrap Sunday parking charges, setting up another showdown at the Board of Supervisors when it considers the MTA budget. The members also voted to prioritize expanded service to low-income seniors and youths, banking on some of a $15 million surplus the agency has, and delayed some planned fare increases.

But parking was the most contentious issue in the budget process.

Mayor Ed Lee  and the Supervisors heard us on the Sunday parking meters. Keep up the good work. More letters and comments will get us back our streets. Thanks for all your support. You are great!

The Mayor vs. Muni: The Fight Over Sunday Meters

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee is ratcheting up his opposition to Sunday parking meter enforcement, telling KCBS that he refuses to accept any compromises, and that he is “only willing to consider ‘no enforcement’ and not more or less.” But with Muni considering a budget that includes a fare increase for all adult riders, SFMTA leadership is reluctant to give up the revenue that Sunday parking provides. The Mayor knows how many people are being effected negatively by the SFMTA policies, and may have seen some evidence that is being gathered by their opponents that could put their entire program in jeopardy. The recent spate of insider claims of accounting fraud, handshake deals, and motions to rescind parking policies is not going unnoticed by the Mayor’s office. He is trying to hold out an olive branch to the angry public as a last ditch effort to placate the growing throng of pitchfork-wielding public mobs who are aiming their anger at the SFMTA, and calling for a major overhaul.
This is not just about cars and drivers paying to park on Sunday. This is about the displacement of San Francisco residents, businesses and cultural centers. “Let the Voters Decide” is the call to action. FixtheMTA has generated over a hundred signatures and comments sent it went live a few days ago. Sign on if you agree that the time has come for a referendum on SFMTA policies. Tell the city officials you have had enuf.
