Fight over Great Highway begins

FIGHT OVER GREAT HIGHWAY:
The question of whether to ban cars on the Great Highway will again be on the ballot this November. Supervisor Joel Engardio said last week that four other supervisors and Mayor London Breed signed on to a ballot measure to permanently close the Great Highway, which is slowly eroding due to its proximity to the ocean, and transform it into a park.

This news didn’t sit well with many west side residents, who took to Facebook groups and WeChat, the Chinese social media app, to attack the idea. “It’s called a highway because that’s what it is!” one Facebook user said. Some went so far as to suggest recalling Engardio. The “Open the Great Highway” X account also announced that it is seeking a political consultant to oppose the ballot measure.

Chan, who represents the Richmond District, said that she’s opposing the ballot measure in favor of a “compromise—keeping both the open space and vehicle access. In 2022, voters rejected a ballot measure to fully open the Great Highway to cars. Currently, the two-way, four-lane road is open to cars on weekdays and closed on weekends….(more)
